A TRULY INCLUSIVE INTERNATIONAL EVENT

When the Barbados Council for the Disabled recognized that we had to take some proactive steps to advance the inclusion of persons with disabilities; special missions were sent to our overseas Diaspora last year to consult and seek their support for our goals of inclusion.

Inclusion is about ALL of us. Inclusion is about living full lives - about learning to live together. Inclusion treasures diversity and builds communities. Inclusion is about our "abilities" - our gifts and how to share them. Inclusion is NOT just a disability issue."

To advance inclusion of persons with disabilities, we are mindful that programmes such as FULLY ACCESSIBLE BARBADOS (FAB), DISABILITY AWARENESS DAY (DAD), PARKING ID’s, Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness and SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION, among others being implemented by the Council will need to be sustained

As the majority of NGO’s began to feel the crunch of the harsh economic avalanche worldwide, the Council has certainly been included in this aspect of our society; If only we could be this easily included in other aspects as well. The members of the Barbados Council for the Disabled are not sitting idly by waiting for ‘better days to come’. We have come together to not only show that persons with disabilities are capable but are also resilient people with a high degree of professionalism and creativity.

As a result, the Barbados International Fair was conceptualized. This event is intended to raise funds to assist our members to be able to sustain their various projects as well as the continuation of the many awareness programmes of the Barbados Council for the Disabled.

Realising that this event was an ambitious undertaking for the Council, we nevertheless have forged ahead with plans after having to reschedule from March 2010 to Saturday 28th August 2010. Being held in the auspicious Gardens of Government House, the afternoon promises to be enchanted and unique. Incorporating the taste of our Caribbean culture with a bit of North American, the flavors of the event will surely offer something for everyone. Prizes include Tickets for two on Jet Blue, a weekend for two at a West Coast Hotel, dinners, lunches, TV, a Divan and many other fantastic prizes being offered.

This month through our Voice of Our Own we invite everyone to be a part of this Inaugural Fair and share with us as we celebrate another inclusive milestone.
